Birstall Urban Motorcycle Project for Youth (BUMPY)

BUMPY was established in 1989 in Kirklees, West Yorkshire to provide opportunities to participate in “on” and “off” road motorcycle riding to support vulnerable children, young people and adults (aged 6 - 70 years). Through our services we help people to stay safe, gain confidence, improve behaviours, acquire new skills, volunteer, move towards and gain employment, and support improved community relations and road safety for all.

Project Manager

BUMPY began working with Competitive Solutions in November 2016. From our first meeting, the CSL team have taken the time to understand our charity, help identify our needs and provided innovative project ideas to support us to expand and develop our services.

We have been successful with both capital and revenue funding and have received over £400,000 of income to build and shape our organisation for the future. We believe that we are just at the beginning of our working relationship with CSL and we are lucky to consider their staff as part of the BUMPY team.

Can’t wait to come again. There is nowhere like this near where I live, so can only come when visiting nan and grandad. Can’t wait till next time.

HOW Competitive Solutions have helped us

We have received far more than just “funding application” writing from the team at Competitive Solutions. They have provided the following to the charity:

  • Supported an independent review to highlight and report on our impact.

  • Written successful applications to secure both capital and revenue funding.

  • Provided policy and procedure documents to change the way we operate.

  • Guided the Board and staff to focus on a strategic and long term development plan.

  • Developed exciting and innovative new project plans to expand the work of BUMPY.

  • Provided regular updates on progress, whilst offering advice and support during the application process.

  • Hosted a BUMPY “Away Day”.

“Back On TRACK” project

Competitive Solutions supported BUMPY to successfully receive funding for a 3 year project from the National Lottery.

“Back On Track” provides a unique, inspirational and motivational motorcycle traineeship and volunteering programme. The programme supports young people (aged 12 - 16) who are at risk of committing crime or in danger of going back in to crime (re-offending) and are known to the West Yorkshire Metropolitan Police within the Leeds and Kirklees area.

The project has been designed to:

  1. prevent offending and re-offending crime rates;

  2. support young people to get 'back on track' by providing one to one, and group mentoring and befriending sessions, building their confidence, self-esteem and levels of motivation;

  3. provide life skills, training and education opportunities in;

    a) motorcycle and mechanical studies;

    b) basic CPR;

    c) first aid;

    d) safeguarding;

    e) sports leadership.
